Log Candle How To

The Log Candle F.A.Q's...

How do I start the Log Candle?

Light all the wicks. Once the wicks are lit, let the wax on top start to burn.  Add a small piece of wax near the center as the previous wax burns away.

How does the log stay on fire?

The wax is the fuel for the fire, the wicks in the wood act as reservoirs for the wax, and substrate for the flame.
Wax pieces melt in and re-saturate the wicks and wood, keeping the fire burning approx. 10 min per piece (depending on the size of the wax piece).

Does any wax work?

Yes, almost any old candles or wax meltables will work just fine.  Make sure to cut them into small enough pieces!

Some 100% natural waxes have been reported to not work as well, because the burning temp. is a little higher.

Can I use oil or citronella?

Yes!  The wax pieces that are included are already scented by color.  Yellow and orange have citronella oil in the pieces.  But you should also be able to drip small amount of oil on top for scent.
Citronella candles that you have at home should work as well!  Remember to break them into small pieces.

Can I make S'mores?!

With the Soy/Beeswax pieces, YES!
But, unfortunately, not with the colored/scented wax pieces that are included are made from old scented and paraffin-mix candles.  Any marshmallow or food cooked over the open fire will turn black and taste like potpourri.

How do I re-light The Log Candle after the initial wicks are gone?

The wicks are still there, they never really burn past the surface of the log.
To help re-light, place a small piece of wax near center wick, melt the wax and heat the surface of the log/wick to get a small flame started. The flame will grow as the wax melts.

(Remember to protect the small flame from the wind)

It's hard to start the fire after the first time!

It is a balance of too much/too little wax.  There should be almost no wax visible on top after using the candle the first time.

Usually, if there is wax visible on top of the log after the first use or more, there is too much wax.  Use the torch and burn off the excess wax on top, this may take a minute or two of serious torching.  Sometimes tilting the log is necessary to drip the excess wax off the top of the candle.

If there is no wax visible on top, or if you’ve let the log burn itself out.  It may need a little more wax down in the wicks.
Place a piece of wax next to the center wick, melt some of the wax into the wick before trying to light the wick.  Once you get a small flame started, slowly add a small piece next to the growing flame.

How do I put out The Log Candle?

Just place the top on The Log Candle, and it will cut off the oxygen and snuff the flame.

Make sure the flame is out.

You can also let it go out by letting the wax burn off.

DO NOT USE WATER!

How much wax should I put on top?

Start with 1 piece at a time.
Larger logs can handle more wax on top.

Putting too many pieces can drown the wicks and put out the flame, or cause wax to overflow and burn down the sides. — This can cause a gap where the lid will not close properly.  This will get worse in time if not burned correctly.

The edges have become uneven and the top doesn't fit right!

This can happen after a while of burning, and overloading it with wax, which overflows and burns the edge.

You can slowly fix the uneven edges by melting small pieces on the high points of the log.

Can the Log Candle get wet? Rain/Snowed on?

Ideally you’d like to keep the logs from getting too wet.  They are wood, and can crack if they get wet and dry out too much.
A covered patio is ideal. But don’t panic if it gets wet.

Where do you get the wood and wax?

I get hardwood logs from local tree trimmers.  Ideally saving them from having to pay to dump the logs, and giving them a long second life.

I get most of the wax from recycled candles.  Churches, thrift stores, donations, etc.

Can I donate my old candles?

Absolutely!  You can mail any candles to:

Brighton, CO 80603

Thank you!
