Light all the wicks. No need to add any wax pieces at first.
Once the wicks are lit, add a small piece of wax next to the center wick to keep the fire going. Add additional wax pieces after the other wax has completely melted into the log.
You periodically add wax pieces (included) to the top of the burning log. The wax pieces melt in and re-saturate the wicks and wood, keeping the fire burning another 10=15 min per piece (depending on the size of the wax piece).
Almost any old candles or wax meltables will work just fine. Make sure to cut them into small enough pieces!
Some 100% natural waxes have been reported to not work as well.
Yes! The wax pieces that are included are already scented by color. Yellow and orange have citronella oil in the pieces. But you should also be able to drip small amount of oil on top for scent.
Citronella candles that you have at home should work as well! Remember to break them into small pieces.
Unfortunately, no.
The wax pieces that are included are made from old scented and paraffin-mix candles. Any marshmallow or food cooked over the open fire will turn black and taste like potpourri. 🙁
The wicks are still there, they’re just level with the top.
To help start a fire, place a small piece of wax on top of The Log Candle, and start a small fire near the piece of wax. As the fire melts the wax (~2-3 minutes), it should become a nice fire.
(Remember to protect the small flame from the wind)
It is delicate balance of wax/fire needed on top. There should be almost no wax visible on top after using the candle the first time.
Usually, if there is wax visible on top of the log after the first use or more, there is too much wax. Use the torch and burn off the excess wax on top, this may take a minute or two of serious torching. Sometimes tilting the log is necessary to drip the excess wax off the top of the candle.
If there is no wax visible on top, or if you’ve let the log burn itself out. It may need a little more wax down in the wicks.
Place a piece of wax next to the center wick, melt some of the wax into the wick before trying to light the wick. Once you get a small flame started, slowly add a small piece next to the growing flame.
Just place the top on The Log Candle, and it will quickly go out.
DO NOT USE WATER!
Just 1 or 2 pieces will do just fine.
Putting too many pieces on top at once will cause wax to overflow and burn down the sides, which will get worse and make the edges of the log uneven and the lid will not close well.
This can happen after a while of burning, and overloading it with wax, which overflows and burns the edge.
You can slowly fix the uneven edges by melting small pieces on the high points of the log.
Ideally you’d like to keep the logs from getting too wet. They are wood, and can crack if they get wet and dry out too much.
A covered patio is ideal. But don’t panic if it gets wet.
I get hardwood logs from local tree trimmers. Ideally saving them from having to pay to dump the logs, and giving them a long second life.
I get most of the wax from recycled candles. Churches, thrift stores, donations, etc.
